LANDAU, JUDAH LEO

(1866-1942)
South African rabbi, scholar, poet and playwright, of Galician origin. He served as minister of the North Manchester Hebrew Congregation (1900-4) before moving to Johannesburg to become rabbi of the Johannesburg Hebrew Congregation. In 1915 he became chief rabbi there and professor of Hebrew at Witwatersrand University. He wrote Hebrew poems and plays, as well as studies of modern Hebrew literature.
