EISNER, KURT

(1867-1919)
German journalist and statesman. His father was a merchant in Berlin. He became a journalist and published a book about Nietzsche. In 1892 he went to Marburg where he studied withHermann Cohen, and later became the editor of the Social Democrats' newspaper. In 1916 he founded a weekly discussion group with an anti-war slant. Two years later he was arrested and imprisoned. Upon his release, he became involved in the revolution which overthrew the Bavarian monarchy, becoming prime minister of the Bavarian Republic.
