Born in New York City, she left school at 14 to make her stage debut as an actress withMarie Wainwright. She earned renown in 1892 inBronsonHoward'sAristocracy. In 1895-1896, she toured asleading ladyinNat C. Goodwin's company. She played the title role inTrilby(1895), Edith inSecret ServicewithWilliam Gillette(1897), and such heroines as Tosca, Gismonda, Fedora, and many others.
