Anglican priest who, along with his brotherCharles Wesley, founded Methodism. He profoundly influencedhymnodyin England and America through a series of hymnals beginning withA Collection of Psalms and Hymnsof 1737. He freely adapted popular and evenoperatictunes for religious texts, which proved very effective in making converts and provided the first large repertory forcongregationalsinging in England besidesmetrical psalms.
