Primarily a composer ofLieder, symphonies, piano and chamber works, Schubert also composed about 30 short vocal works for the Roman Catholic liturgy, a "GermanRequiem," a Germanmass, and six Latin masses that are frequently performed in concert and occasionally in liturgies, particularly the second in G major (1815, D.167) and the last two in A-flat major (1819–1822, D.678) and E-flat major (1828, D.950). Schubert omitted some canonical phrases in all six masses, either for personal reasons or because that was the practice in Vienna. They are lightly scored symphonic masses in the tradition ofWolfgang Amadeus MozartandFranz Joseph Haydn, lasting from about 25 minutes to one hour.
