He incorporated aspects of medieval sacred music such asfauxbourdonandmodalwriting with modernist choral harmony to create an authentic idiom for mid-20thcentury Roman Catholic liturgical music. He composed over 20masses, mostly for mixed chorus, including two with German text, oneorgan mass, and oneRequiemas well as a St. John and a St. Matthewpassionand manymotetsandcanticlesin both Latin and German.
