Student ofMaurice Greenefrom about 1719, composer to theChapel Royalfrom 1736, he compiled the three-volumeCathedral Music(1760–1773), an anthology of Anglican church music fromThomas TallistoWilliam Croftthat remained in common use into the 20th century. He also composed about 70anthems, aburial service, fourTeDeums, and a dozenhymnsand otherchants.
