DEVRIENT, HANS

Actor, historian. The son ofOtto Devrientand grandson ofEduard Devrient, Hans began his career as an actor in Weimar. He subsequently worked in a series of venues that included the Mannheim National Theater, the Frankfurt am Main City Theater, and the city theaters of Jena and Oldenburg before settling inBerlinto complete his doctoral studies. Devrient was then appointed professor of theater history in Weimar, where he wrote and edited several publications. Most notable among them was a history ofJohann FriedrichSchönemann's troupe, a drama survey of the 18th century, and a history of the Oberammergau passion play.
