EDELMAN, PAWEŁ

(1958-). A leading Polish cinematographer. After graduating from the Cinematography Department of theŁódź Film Schoolin 1988, Edelman has been working in Poland and abroad. Between 1988 and 1990, he worked as a camera operator on films byFilip BajonandWojciech Marczewski, among others. He achieved critical recognition working as a cinematographer on almost all the films directed byWładysław Pasikowski, starting withKroll(1991), and including the post-Communist classicThe Pigs(1992). In the late 1990s, Edelman also began collaborating with directorJerzy Stuhr(Love Stories, 1997, andBig Animal, 2000),Leszek Wosiewicz(Family Events, 1997), andJanusz Zaorski(Happy New York, 1997). Edelman's growing stature is evidenced by his work onAndrzej Wajda's heritage films,Pan Tadeusz(1999) andRevenge(2002), and also by his recent work onRoman Polański's multinational coproductions, such asThe Pianist(2002) andOliver Twist(2005). ForThe PianistandRay(2004, Taylor Hackford) Edelman received several prestigious international awards.
