Anionic detergent that at millimolar concentrations will bind to and denature proteins, forming an SDS-protein complex. The amount of SDS bound is proportional to the molecular weight of the protein, and each SDS molecule, bound by its hydrophobic domain, contributes one negative charge to the protein thus swamping its intrinsic charge. This property is exploited in the separation of proteins by SDS-PAGE.
