Whitby, Synod of: translation

664. The calculation of the date for *Easter was a fractious issue in the early Western Church, there being two 'schools' of calculation, the Irish and the Roman. At Whitby the issue was finally resolved in favour of the Roman mode after Bishop Colman lost the debate and withdrew to Iona. This permitted a reorganisation of the English Church by Theodore, archbishop of Canterbury.
