YAVNE'ELI (WARSHA VSKY), SHMUEL

(1884-1961)
Israeli organizer of Yemenite aliyah. Born in the Ukraine, he went to Palestine in 1905 and was an agricul-tural pioneer. In 1911 he was sent to the Yemen by the Zionist Organization. Due to his efforts, about 1500 Yemenites emigrated to Palestine in 1911-12 and a Yemenite mosahvah, Mahane Yehuda, was established. A fourth and fitth Yemenite aliyah came between the wars, and in 1949 the Operation Magic Carpet brought 40,000 Yemenites to Israel.
