VOGEL, JULIUS

(1835-1899)
New Zealand prime minster. Born in London, he studied at London University School and at the Royal School of Mines. In 1852 he went to Australia where he was an assayer. He then embarked on journalism and wrote for several Victorian newspapers. In 1861 he settled in the South Island city of Otago, New Zealand. He founded theOtago Daily Timeswhich he edited. He became a member of the Otago provincial council in 1863 and later provincial treasurer. He subse-quently was elected to the house of representatives and became prime minister in 1873.
