MAHLER, RAPHEL

(1899-1977)
Galician historian. He was born in Nowy Sadz in eastern Galicia. He served as a teacher in Jewish secondary schools in Poland. In 1937 he went to the US and taught in various educational institutions in New York. In 1950 he went to Israel, where he lectured on the history of Israel at Tel Aviv University. He was appointed professor there in 1961. He wrote various works about Jewish history from a Marxist perspective, including a history of the Jews in modern times, and studies of the Jews in Poland, the Karaites, and Gallician Jewry.
