MAHLER, EDUARD

(1857-1945)
Hungarian orien-talist, mathematician and astronomer. He was born in Cziffer. He taught oriental history and languages at Budapest University, becoming professor there in 1914. In 1912 he was appointed director of the Egyptological Institute in Budapest and in 1922 director of the Oriental Institute. HisHandbuch der jüdischen Chronologicestablished the systems of the different Jewish calendars and chronologies in the light of ancient Near Eastern and medieval calculations.
