GAMALIEL II

(fl. 1st-2nd cent)

Palestinian elder. He was president of the Sanhedrin at Jabneh, and strengthened the new centre there. He consolidated Jewish law and sought to unite the Jewish people around the Torah. He provoked a revolt against his authority andEleazar ben Azariahwas appointed nasi in his place. Later he was reinstated.
