German historical novelist. He was born in Munich. He wrote plays as a young man and in 1926 his novelJud Susswas published. Eventually he settled in the US. His novelThe Oppermannsdeals with a German Jewish family during the rise of Nazism. He also wrote a historical trilogy on the life ofJosephus.
