DAINOW, TZEVI HIRSCH (MAGGID OF SLUTSK)

(1832-77)
Russian preacher. He was born in Slutsk. He advocated combining Torah with the haskalah, and upheld the efficacy of manual labour and the need for educational reform. He was active on behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Culture Among the Jews of Russia. Due to opposition to his views, he emigrated to England and settled in London, where he preached to Russian and Polish immigrants.
