British literary critic, nephew ofSamuel Daiches. He was born in Sunderland. He taught at the universities of Chicago, Cornell, Cambridge and Sussex. HisTwo Worlds:An Edinburgh Jewish Childhooddepicts his rebellion against Orthodox Judaism personified by his father. His interest in Hebrew matters is reflected inThe King James Version of the English Bible.
