UENO TENJIN MATSURI

A festival held at the Sugawara jinja (see Tenjin) in Ueno, Mie prefecture, October 23rd-25th. On the final day of the festival there is a procession of more than 100 demons (Oni-gyoretsu) said to have originated in an attempt to stop a plague. The demons are followed byshichi-fuku-jinodori (dancers representing the seven gods of good fortune) and variousyataiandmikoshi.
