Westerns in Cinema

TOMBSTONE (1993)

Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, George P. Cosmatos (director). This is one of the 1990s versions of the Wyatt Earp legend bent on portraying the lawman as utterly unsympathetic, mean, and vicious. Earp (Russell) shows no love, no compassion for his wife, who is addicted to laudanum, and rejects her for a dance hall girl. But, of course, that is the point; there was no heroism involved in the legend. In thisalternative Westerneven the gunfight at the O.K. Corral is decentered from the narrative. Many fans thought Val Kilmer as Doc Hollidaymade the movie.
