Westerns in Cinema

THE DJANGO SERIES

Beginning with Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 spaghetti Western Django and Slim Alone’s Django Always Draws Second (1974), the Django series consisted of 20 Westerns. When, early in its filming, the series became hugely popular in Europe, several Westerns already in production changed the name of their main character to capitalize on the popularity, so the series is not actually coherent or consistent. Throughout the series various actors, such as Franco Nero, Glenn Saxson, and Gianni Garko, played the lead role of Django, and various directors besides Corbucci profited from the popular hero’s capital.
