Born Ruben Sax, Richard Brooks earned numerous Academy Awards for writing and directing. He was nominated best director for his only Western as a director, The Professionals (1966). This film is frequently seen as the frontrunner to the enormous numbers of Italian spaghetti Westerns, mostly set in Mexican deserts and full of bizarre action sequences much like Brooks’s Blazing Saddles (1974), although Brooks’s style emphasized understatement and subtlety of psychological emotion, matters unknown in most Italian westerns.
