After gaining newspaper experience in Troy, New York, where he was born, Fyles moved to New York. For 25 years, he was drama critic for theNew York Sun. His collaboration withDavid BelascoonThe Girl I Left Behind Me(1893) prompted him to continue playwriting with such works asCumberland '61(1897) andKit Carson(1901). From 1908 until his death, he was a syndicated writer on theatre topics.
