The writer and editor Deshler Welch wrote for newspapers in Buffalo, New York, for over a decade after theCivilWar, followed by several years on New York City newspapers before becoming editor and founder ofThe Theatre(1886-1893), a pictorial magazine on the stage and allied arts. He also served as publicist forAugustin Dalyand wrote a book about President Grover Cleveland.
