SATZ, LUDWIG

A belovedYiddish theatrecomedian, Ludwig Satz debuted in 1918 and was greatly admired for his skill creating diverse characters through mastery ofmakeupand improvisation. S. M. Melamed described him as the greatest Jewish comedian of his time in a 1925New York Timesarticle, but he made occasional departures from comedy, as inThe Messiah Is Coming(1937). Satz appeared on Broadway inPotash and Perlmutter,Detectives(1926) andMoney Mad(1937) and in a few motion pictures, includingThe Lunatic(1927),What a Mother-in-Law! (1934), andHis Wife's Lovers(1931), billed as "the first Jewish musical comedy talking picture."
