Born in London, she began her theatre career as an actress using the name Miss Lucette and making her New York debut in 1879. However, it was as a playwright that she gained particular recognition. Among Ryley's many produced plays of the 1890s and 1900s,American Citizen(1897) was particularly successful as a vehicle forNat C. Goodwin, also featuringMaxine Elliott.
