Edward Everett Rose was born in Canada, but was educated at Harvard University and became one of the most admired adapters of novels for the theatre, creating at least 50 adaptations, most of which were highly successful. These includeThe Prisoner of Zenda(1895),Under the Red Robe(1896),David Harum(1900),Richard Carvel(1900),Janice Meredith(1900),Alice of Old Vincennes(1901), andPenrod(1918). Rose also directed plays, scoring hits withThe Pride of Jennico(1900) andAlias Jimmy Valentine(1910).
