Born in Liverpool, England, and educated in California, he discovered a facility for writing plays and novels. His first New York production,Two Nights in Rome(1880), had a complicated plot interspersed with exciting incidents. Noteworthy among his dozen or so produced plays wereFresh, the American(1881), which starredJohn T. Raymond, andPrince Karl(1886), a popular success forRichard Mansfield.
