Born in Krakow, Bertha Gerstein (also spelled Gersten) immigrated to the United States at an early age and began her stage career invaudevillebefore a transition to dramatic acting, often as a member of theYiddish Art Theatrecompany and as costar ofJacob Ben-Ami.
