The younger brother ofDustin Farnumwas born in Boston, where he acted in stock before touring with various companies, including those of Margaret Mather,Olga Nethersole, andViola Allen. Hesupportedhis brother inThe Littlest Rebel(1911), but did his most important work in motion pictures.
