Father Phillips is a professor of English at Loyola University of Chicago, where he has taught for more than 30 years and written many books on film directors, many of whom he has known personally and interviewed. After receiving his master’s degree from Loyola University, Father Phillips earned his doctorate in English literature at Fordham University. He is a founding member of the editorial board of bothLiterature/Film QuarterlyandThe Tennessee Williams Journal.His first extended treatment of STANLEY KUBRICK can be found in chapter 7 of his bookThe Movie Makers:Artists in an Industry(Chicago: Nelson-Hall, 1973). That chapter was later expanded and revised forMajor Film Directors of the American and British Cinema(Bethlehem, Pa. : Lehigh University Press, 1990) and again for the 1999 edition. His first book entirely devoted to the director wasStanley Kubrick: A Film Odyssey(New York: Popular Press, 1975), described as a “fine review of Stanley Kubrick’s films,” fromDay of the FighttoBarry Lyndon(1975), which was in production as the book was being written. In 2001 Father Phillips editedStanley Kubrick Interviews(Jackson: University Press of Mississippi). He also served as research adviser to director JAN HARLAN for the documentary filmSTANLEY KUBRICK:A LIFE IN PICTURES,which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001. ANTHONY FREWIN, Kubrick’s assistant for 30 years, wrote in July 1999 that Father Phillips “has been a good friend to us over the years and wrote what Stanley thought was the best book on his films. ”
