LAND SUBSIDENCE

land subsidence: translation

The subsidence of a surface due to a loss of support [16]. Often occurs as a result of over pumping underlying aquifers or as a result of mining activities. In karst terranes, subsidence can occur as a result of manmade changes to the natural hydrologic system (ground-water withdrawals or storm-water injection) or as a consequence of the natural dissolution process. Subsidences may be sudden or progress slowly over time.
