SHONO JUNZO

(1921–)
Shono Junzo, an author from Osaka, graduated from Kyushu University, where he met Shimao Toshio. His writing, though autobiographical, lacks the self-conscious correspondence of I-Novels. He writes of the daily dramas of domestic life in suburban, contemporary Japan. Shono won the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Prize for Purusaido shokei (1954; tr. Evenings at the Pool, 1958). He was part of the Third Generation of postwar writers and is a member of the Japan Art Academy. Shono has been awarded the Noma Prize (1971) and the Yomiuri Prize (1965), among others. He continues writing today, with novels that feature retirement-age protagonists.
