SATO HARUO

(1892–1964)
Sato Haruo was a poet and novelist from Wakayama Prefecture. After graduating from middle school, he moved to Tokyo and eventually dropped out of Keio University. However, while at Keio he was a student of Nagai Kafu. In 1909, he published poems in the literary journals Subaru (Pleiades) and Mita bungaku (Mita Literature) and gained the attention of intellectuals. He published many other poems and in 1948 became a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 1960, he received the Order of Cultural Merit and died of a heart attack in 1964.
