Okrug: translation

Usually translated as “district,” anokrugis an administrative division in the Russian Federation. After thedissolution of the Soviet Union, a number ofautonomous okrugswere downgraded to okrugs within their correspondingfederal subjects, including Aga Buryatiya, Komi-Permyakiya,Koryakiya, and Ust-Orda Buryatiya. InSamara Oblast, the lowest-level territorial division is the okrug rather than the traditionalraion;Belgorod,Murmansk, andKrasnodar Kraialso use okrugs to designate internal geopolitical divisions. Russia’s federal cities,MoscowandSt.Petersburg, are similarly subdivided into okrugs.
