KARELOVA, GALINA NIKOLAEVNA

(1950– )
Born in theSverdlovsk Oblastand educated at the Department of Economics of the Ural University, Galina Karelova made a career in Soviet academia. She earned a PhD in social studies and worked in highereducationuntil 1990, when she was elected deputy of the Oblast Soviets. In the 1990s, she worked in the federal councils and ministries, focusing on social programs. Since 2000, she has been deputy of theState Duma, and she has been in charge of social programs, taxation, and budget committees.
Karelova is also an active member of several prominent women’s organizations, including the Russian Association of Businesswomen and the Association of Russian Women’s NGOs. She has represented Russian delegations ondemographic issuesat theUnited Nations. Her work with homeless children is particularly renowned.
