CONGRESS OF PEOPLE’S DEPUTIES OF RUSSIA

Originally known as the Congress of People’s Deputies of theRussian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, the Congress of People’s Deputies was the supreme governing body of Russia from 1990 until 1993 when it was abolished byBoris Yeltsinin the midst of theconstitutional crisis of 1993. It was succeeded by the bicameralFederal Assembly of Russia. The Congress was responsible for electing theSupreme Soviet of the Russian Federation, a legislative body that governed the country between the congressional sessions.
