BABURIN, SERGEY NIKOLAYEVICH

Politician.
Born in Semipalatinsk,Kazakhstan, Sergey Baburin holds a PhD in law from Leningrad State University. While serving in the Supreme Soviet of theRussian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, he was one of the few high-ranking officials who voted against thedissolution of the Soviet Union. He achieved national prominence during theconstitutional crisis of 1993for his strident anti-Yeltsinposition, accusing the president, as well asMikhail Gorbachevand other prominent politicians, of being a disloyal “fifth column” of the West. Baburin established theNarodnaia Volia(People’s Will) movement, which ultimately became thePeople’s Union(now the Russian All-People’s Union). His political views are nationalistic andEurasianist. He is vice chairman of theState Duma.
