VOET, GIJSBERT (GISBERTUS VOETIUS)

(1589–1676)
Professor of theology at the University of Utrecht from 1634. As a firm Calvinist, he fought the Arminians. He not only was a prolific polemist but also wrote several extensive treatises in which he sys tematized the dogma and role of the church. Voet entered into a long dispute with his Leiden colleague Johannes Coccejus, who advo cated a more liberal direction. Their arguments primarily concerned the Commandment of the Sabbath and grace and remission.
