TULP, NICOLAES (CLAES) PIETERSZ

(1593–1674)
Physician. Tulp studied medicine in Leiden and settled as a physician in Ams terdam, where he was elected burgomaster several times. His fame is based on his books on Observationes medicarum (1641, 1652). Tulp was appointed praelectorof anatomy with the Amsterdam guild of surgeons in 1628. He appears in Rembrandt’s world-famous The Anatomy Lesson (1632, now at the Mauritshuis, The Hague).
