During the Middle Ages and the early modern period, tav erns played an important role in the communication of news and in formation for travelers. Gradually taking over the role of the guest rooms (hospitia) in the convents, they were built at strategic points along highways that were frequented by merchants, wandering schol ars, and pilgrims.
