SNOUCKHUR GRONJE, CHRISTIAAN

(1857–1936)
Scholar of Islam who wrote a famous book on Mecca (1888–1889). He went to the Netherlands East Indiesas an advisor to the government, espe cially with a view to ending the Aceh War in northern Sumatra. In 1906, he was appointed professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at Leiden University. Snouck became a supporter of the so-called eth ical policy in the East Indies, working toward a gradual participation of natives in the government.
