Nieuwpoort: translation

Town in the countyof Flandersin Belgiumthat par ticipated in the wealth of the neighboring cities Bruges and Ieper dur ing the 15th century. Because of its strategic position on the coast of the North Sea, it has been repeatedly besieged. During the Dutch Re volt, the stadtholder Maurice defeated the Spanish army near Nieuwpoort in 1600, a victory of no political consequence, but one that lived on in the collective memory as a military masterpiece.
