NAARDEN

Naarden: translation

Small town (population17,000) in the provinceof North ern Holland(south of Amsterdam). It was rebuilt as a fortified place after its devastation during civil strife in 1350 and again after the Spanish massacre during the Revolt of 1572. It has preserved its me dieval character to the present day, whereas most fortresses else where were pulled down in the late 19th century. Naarden is the bur ial place of Czech scholar Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670).
