MERULA, PAULUS

(1558–1607)
Historian and librarian. Merula studied law and history. In 1592, he was appointed extraordinarius professor of history at the University of Leiden, an office that he combined beginning in 1597 with the librarianship of the Leiden ac ademic library. He published several historical books, including Vita Erasmi (1607) and Cosmographiae generalis libri III (1605), but he is most famous for his guide on legal proceedings, Maniere van pro cederen in civiele zaken (1592).
