MANSHOLT, SICCO LEENDERT

(1908–1995)

Politician. Mans holt specialized in agriculture. From 1931 until 1936, he was an em ployee on a plantation on Java in the Netherlands East Indies. Af ter World WarII, he became a member of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA, Labor Party) and served as minister of agriculture and fish eries from 1945 to 1957. From 1958 until 1973, Mansholt was a commissioner for the European Community, the predecessor of the European Union (EU). His main contribution has been the imple mentation of the Common Agricultural Policy.
