DOORBRAAK (BREAKTHROUGH)

A Dutch term used in politi cal circles after World War II. The persons concerned wished to achieve a breakthrough within the pillarized society by ending the di viding line between the Christian and non-Christian political par ties, the so-called “antithesis” of Abraham Kuyper. This break through was only partially achieved. The most visible result was the establishment of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA, Labor Party).
