BIJNKERSHOEK, CORNELIS VAN

Jurist. Van Bijn kershoek studied law at the Academy of Franeker in Frisia and was admitted as barrister at the Court of Holland. He published exten sively on civil law and international law; some of his works were translated in French and English (for example, “On the Dominion of the Sea,” 1703). In 1704, he was appointed president of the High Court of Holland. Until his death, he kept a private journal on the cases under review in the court. These Observationes tumultuariae, a unique source for the understanding of court practice in the 18th cen tury, have been published (five vols., 1923–1962).
