The Washington Kurdish Institute was created in 1996 as a nonprofit, research, educational, and advocacy organization concerning the Kurds. It is located in Washington, D.C. Dr.Najmaldin O. Karimserves as its president.
Since its creation, the WKI has sponsored conferences on a variety of issues such as the long-term health effects of thechemical weaponsattack onHalabja, promoted cultural initiatives such as Kurdishlanguageclasses, and lobbied theU.S. government on Kurdish issues, among others. The WKI has an Internet homepage at www.kurd.org and also maintains close relations with theInstitut Kurde de Paris.
